We all know the feeling. You sit down to work, but the coffee shop is too loud, or the silence at home is just… weird. So, you put on headphones.
But does “Lo-Fi Hip Hop” actually help your brain? Or does it just sound nice?
According to new neuroscience, the answer is yes and no. If you really want to get into a state of “Deep Work” (hyper-focused, non-stop productivity), you need to trick your brain using specific sounds called 40Hz Gamma Waves and Brown Noise.
The best part? You don’t need to pay for expensive apps. You can become your own music producer using AI tools like ElevenLabs and CapCut. In this guide, I’ll show you how to make a professional “Noir Hum” track that scientists say might boost your memory and focus.
The Science: Why “Brown” is the New “White”
You’ve heard of White Noise (that static TV sound). But have you met its cooler, deeper cousin: Brown Noise?
If White Noise sounds like a hissing hose, Brown Noise sounds like a heavy rainstorm or a rumbling airplane engine . It is deeper, smoother, and less annoying to the human ear.
The Science: A major 2025 study found that while all noises are good for masking distractions (blocking out a loud roommate), Brown Noise is the most “predictable.” Your brain doesn’t have to work hard to listen to it, which frees up energy for your actual work .
The Secret Weapon: 40Hz Gamma Waves
This is where it gets sci-fi. Your brain runs on electricity. Gamma waves are the fastest brainwaves, associated with peak concentration and problem-solving.
Researchers at MIT have been studying 40Hz sensory stimulation. They found that listening to a pulse or click at 40 times per second can actually help synchronize the brain’s neurons . Recent studies confirm that while distracting music hurts focus, a steady 40Hz pulse can keep your brain in the zone .
The Verdict: For a 90-minute “Deep Work” session, you want a combination of Brown Noise (to block distractions) and a 40Hz pulse (to keep your brain alert).
The Game Plan: Your 8 “Specialized” Tracks
We are going to create 8 tracks. Don’t worry, it sounds like a lot, but we are using AI to do the heavy lifting. You will end up with a professional toolkit that apps like Brain.fm charge $10/month for.
Here is your “Menu” of Focus Sounds:
- Noir Hum (Deep Brown Noise)
- Gamma Spike (Pure 40Hz Pulse)
- Alpha Drift (10Hz Relaxed Focus)
- Theta Veil (Rain & Nature)
- Cinema Still (Epic Ambient)
- Binaural Edge (Requires Headphones)
- Delta Bed (Deep Rest/Recovery)
- Neutral Shelter (Pink Noise)
Tutorial: Building Your First Track (“Noir Hum”)
We will build Track #1: Noir Hum. This is the foundation for deep concentration.
Step 1: Generate the “Brown Noise” Base (Using ElevenLabs)
We need a high-quality, looping sound. ElevenLabs is famous for cloning voices, but their Sound Effects generator is amazing for this.
- Go to ElevenLabs and log in (use the link below).
- Go to “Sound Effects.”
- Set Duration: 30 seconds (this is the max for one generation, which is fine).
- Prompt: “Deep brown noise, low rumbling like distant airplane cabin, warm and smooth, no high frequencies, loopable.”
- Generate.
- Pro Tip: In ElevenLabs, look for the Looping toggle. Turn it ON. This makes the AI build the sound specifically to repeat seamlessly .
“To do this step, you need a solid AI generator. I use ElevenLabs because their audio quality is the cleanest I’ve found for brainwave entrainment.

Step 2: Extend to 90 Minutes (Using Audacity)
You have a 30-second clip. A 90-minute Deep Work session needs 90 minutes. We will use Audacity (free software) to loop it without clicks.
- Open Audacity and drag your
Noir_Hum.wavin. - Go to
Effect->Special->Repeat.- Note: If you don’t see “Repeat,” just use
Ctrl + Rafter doing it once.
- Note: If you don’t see “Repeat,” just use
- Enter the number of repeats. (To get 90 minutes from 30 seconds: 90 min = 5400 seconds. 5400 / 30 = 180 repeats. So you want 179 repeats because you already have 1 copy).
- Click OK.
- Pro Polish: Go to
Effect->Fading->Fade In(set to 2 seconds) so the music doesn’t blast your ears when you hit play. - Export as MP3.
Step 3: Add the “Gamma” Pulse (Using CapCut)
Brown noise is great for masking. But the 40Hz Gamma pulse is what tells your brain to wake up. We will mix them in CapCut.
- Open CapCut Desktop.
- Import your 90-minute
Noir_Hum.mp3. - Create the Pulse: We need a pure 40Hz tone. CapCut doesn’t have a built-in “Tone generator,” so use the “Text to Speech” trick.
- Add a text box. Type the letter “M”.
- Use the “Synth Lead” voice. Render it.
- Or, import a free 40Hz tone from a quick Google search.
- Speed it up: You need to match the frequency, but for a pure tone, just keep the sound simple.
- Alternative: Use the Audio -> Extracted feature if you have a sample, but for this guide, keep the tone simple.
- The 80/20 Rule:
- Volume of
Noir_Hum(Brown Noise): 80% (Background) - Volume of
40Hz Pulse(The Beep): 20% (Just barely audible). - Why? You shouldn’t hear the beeping. You should feel it in your bones. This is the secret sauce to brain entrainment.
- Volume of
*”Mixing audio can be tricky, but CapCut makes it drag-and-drop easy. Their free version handles 90-minute timelines without lag.*

How to Use Your New Focus Music
You now have 8 tracks. Here is how to use them for maximum productivity:
- The “Noir Hum” (Brown Noise): Use this for boring, repetitive tasks (like data entry or emails). It drowns out the world.
- The “Gamma Spike” (40Hz): Use this for Math, Coding, or Learning a new language. This is the “Sherlock Holmes” mode.
- The “Alpha Drift” (10Hz): Use this for Brainstorming or Writing. It induces a relaxed, creative state.
The Headphone Rule:
If you are using Track 6 (Binaural Edge) , you must wear headphones. Binaural beats work by playing a slightly different frequency in your left ear vs your right ear. Your brain combines them to create the 40Hz beat. It doesn’t work on speakers .
The “Why this works” Summary
You might be skeptical. Does a 40Hz sound actually work?
Recent clinical studies show that patients using 40Hz stimulation saw a “77% preservation of function” compared to those who didn’t . While those studies were for Alzheimer’s prevention, the science is the same: Stimulating the auditory nerve at this specific speed strengthens the brain’s attention networks.
Instead of paying $15/month for an app that does this, you used ElevenLabs to generate the source, Audacity to loop it, and CapCut to master it. High-performance focus, for free.
Your Turn: Open ElevenLabs, generate your “Noir Hum,” and drop it into CapCut. Let me know in the comments which track helps you focus best!
